Head coach Kevin Willard saw his team get back on track against UMBC on Tuesday night, pulling out a 92-68 win as Maryland was able to empty the bench late. Jahmir Young led the way with 20 points and was one of four to finish in double figures, while Deshawn Harris-Smith was able to find success around the rim and Julian Reese notched his second double-double of the season. But it wasn't all pretty as Maryland's perimeter shooting remains a concern, shooting under 30% from deep in the win, but what stuck out about the win?

“I'm also proud of the way our team fought. I'm not up here to celebrate a moral victory at all, but you know what, to have a breakthrough win, our team played the script to a tee except the finish. And to me, down 20 and we still had a chance to win, our team continued to fight. We knew that we would have to take their best. We withstood the onslaught early in the first half,” head coach Mike Locksley said postgame. “Going in at halftime, we knew that coming out and scoring early and getting a three and out to get us back in the game, and we were able to do it. When you play a champion like Michigan, you’ve got to understand, they won't give it to you and our guys need to continue to understand that we're going to have to go take it.”

Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa accounted for all three turnovers in the loss, while it was Billy Edwards Jr. punching in all three touchdowns on the tush push. Maryland clawed back from an early 16-3 deficit and were able to find success through the air, while Beau Brade led the way on defensive with a team-high 11 tackles including ten solo. Brade and the defense held up in the second half, holding Michigan to just 95 yards and three-and-outs in half of their possessions in the second half.

But late blunders, and a questionable call late, put the game into focus as Michigan escaped with the win and making the Terps winless against the Big Ten elite in 2023. What does that mean as the fans evaluate the success of the season? We give our takes and more.

The weekend began and ended with Maryland basketball competing in the Asheville Tournament, where head coach Kevin Willard's squad was humbled on Friday then Sunday for the first two losses of the season. While the Terps now fall below .500 for the first time in the Willard era, the way the Terps lost was equally as concerning as finishing with 28 turnovers through the weekend. Three-point shooting on both ends of the court was the tale in Friday night's 64-61 loss against Davidson as a late Bobby Durkin three proved to be the difference. Maryland looked to turn the tide on Sunday after building a lead as many as 11 in the first half, but turnovers loomed large as the perimeter shooting gradually went cold, leading to a 66-63 loss that the Terps had to claw back from.

Maryland will now look to get back to .500 in an early marquee matchup against Villanova next Friday night, but what was most concerning? Is patience needed or are there viable concerns?

We shift over to football where the Terps did just enough to pull out a 13-10 win against Nebraska, the program's first win against the Huskers and first win of the season since September 30. It wasn't pretty, but the win also gives the Terps bowl eligibility for the third consecutive season, marking the first time that Maryland has done so since Ralph Friedgen accomplished the feat in 2006-08. Maryland men’s basketball kicked off the 2023-24 season against Mount St. Mary’s on Tuesday night as they cruised to a 68-53 win as DeShawn Harris-Smith and Julian Reese led the way. Harris-Smith made his presence felt early, especially on the defensive end, while Julian Reese was able to find consistent success around the rim though struggled from the free-throw line. Maryland will now shift its attention to the Asheville Tournament this weekend, first taking on Davidson on Friday night. "They came in here and kicked our butts and we got outplayed and outcoached," head coach Mike Locksley said following the loss. "We didn't make plays in any of the three phases that we’re going to need to make consistently."

So, what went so wrong for Maryland football on Saturday afternoon? Despite quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa starting the game with 17 consecutive completions, the veteran quarterback accounted for two of Maryland's four turnovers in the loss, while the running backs accounted for -6 yards on seven attempts. Of course, Penn State's front seven did what many expected them to do as they registered six tackles and 12 tackles for loss for -63 yards. Was Maryland that much worse of a team on Saturday?

" You give some credit to Penn State's front. They are as advertised, a good front, but I don't think they're 51-15 better than us. And so to me, that's where I don't think we play to our potential. And when we don't play to your potential, the first place you look is at me and I have no problem with owning that," Locksley added.

Maryland was able to start hot on both sides of the ball, with the offense opening the game with a touchdown while the defense registered a pair of sacks to force an early punt. But Northwestern found its groove and four consecutive scoring possessions put Maryland in an early deficit. “I think the biggest thing is that it validates me. I got a boss that took a chance and hired me, gave me a chance. I’ve been a failed head coach and Damon [Evans] hired me and gave me this opportunity and all he’s done and him and Colleen [Sorem] give me the resources that I need to be able to put a team together like this one. Are we there yet? No, but the validation for me is the fact that we as a program working with Damon, Colleen and my team, the support staff. We talked all week long and for the last couple of weeks about getting off to a fast start and that’s what we’re able to do. Defense came up big early on with the turnovers. We were able to convert those to scores. Any time you come up with turnovers like we did today, it really helps you on the offensive side of the ball.”

“Our standard is to start fast and finish strong and we didn’t do either one of those two things and we’re still able to come away with a pretty good win,” head coach Mike Locksley said postgame. “And so for us, nobody in locker room is excited about how we played but we overcame some adversity, early adversity, which kind of showed me that we’re the type of team that I thought we could be.

But all eyes were on the offensive line, and with right tackle Gottlieb Ayedze one of several ruled out ahead of kickoff, the Terps adjusted with walk-on Conor Fagan stepping in as the fifth starter.
